Why a phrase is more useful than one word
A translation rarely tells you which words naturally go together or when an expression is appropriate. A short phrase stores meaning, grammar, word order and communicative purpose together.
is short enough to recall quickly and specific enough to make the situation clear.
Which phrases are worth learning
- Functional phrases help you agree, clarify, object or ask for time.
- Situational phrases appear during travel, work, daily life or messaging.
- Personal phrases express things you genuinely say often.
- Register-aware phrases are clearly marked as neutral, informal or rude.
You do not need to save every line from a series. If you do not need the phrase or understand its tone, it will only enlarge the queue.
How to structure the cards
| Direction | What it tests | Example task |
|---|---|---|
| EN → RU | Whether you understand the phrase | What does Fair enough mean here? |
| RU → EN | Whether you can produce the phrase | How would you say the Russian prompt in English? |
If one expression has several substantially different meanings, create separate cards with context instead of placing five translations in one answer.
A useful practice cycle
- Read the situation or Russian prompt.
- Say the English version aloud before revealing the answer.
- Compare both meaning and wording.
- Rate how easily you recalled it.
- Create one more reply using the same pattern.
Cards maintain access to a phrase in memory. Transfer to conversation still requires actual use.
Ready-made topics in the app
The Russian-language content includes categories such as Start Here, Living English, Relationships and Boundaries, Work and Study, and Phrasal Verbs. The 19 August update adds Connectors for Confident Speech, Asking for Help and Keeping Your Cool, and Slang and New Meanings; the current database contains 74 visible ready-made decks.
Harsh or rude language is separated from neutral practice because register is part of meaning, not a decorative label.
